The biliary system consists of the bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreas.  These are all closely associated with the functioning of the liver. Some liver, biliary and pancreatic diseases are congenital. When a disease is congenital, it means that it is present when an individual is born.

However, other liver, biliary and pancreatic diseases can be prevented. Regardless of whether these diseases are congenital, injury-related, viral-induced, or alcohol-induced, they are often very harmful for the health of an individual and medical care is required.

Houston Pancreas Disorder Treatment: Pancreas Functions

The pancreas has both digestive and hormonal functions.  The exocrine tissue secretes bicarbonates to neutralize stomach acid in the duodenum. The enzymes secreted by the exocrine tissue in the pancreas assist in breaking down carbohydrates, fats, proteins, as well as acids in the duodenum.

Enzymes travel down the pancreatic duct into the bile duct and at this point are inactive. These enzymes are then activated when entering the duodenum. The hormones secreted by the endocrine tissue in the pancreas are insulin and glucagon. These regulate the level of glucose in the blood.  Somatostatin is also involved, preventing the release of the other two hormones.

Treatment for Pancreas Disorders: Pancreas Anatomy

The pancreas is an elongated, tapered organ located across the back of the abdomen, behind the stomach. The right side of the organ, which is also called the head, is the widest part of the organ. This part of the pancreas rests in the curve of the duodenum. The duodenum is the first section of the small intestine. The tapered left side extends slightly upward and is called the body of the pancreas.  The tapered left side ends close to the spleen, which is also called the tail.

The pancreas is made up of two types of tissue, the exocrine tissue and the endocrine tissue.  The exocrine tissue secretes digestive enzymes, which are secreted into a network of ducts joining the main pancreatic duct, which runs the length of the pancreas.
The other type of tissue that makes up the pancreas, the endocrine tissue, consists of the islets of Langerhans and secretes hormones into the bloodstream.
