Houston's Gastroenterology Consultants of Bay Area Gastroenterology Offer Colorectal Screening, Launch Patient Education Campaign as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month Kicks Off

Houston-Clear Lake Bay Area Gastroenterology Consultants Underscore Importance of Early Screening for One of the Most Preventable Cancers

Houston - The Bay Area Gastroenterology consultants of Houston-Clear Lake launch an educational initiative, helping the public and healthcare providers throughout Houston and the greater bay area understand the importance of early screening, as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month kicks off.

The board certified physicians specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the stomach, intestines, colon, liver, gallbladder and pancreas share their expertise regarding one of the most preventable and curable cancers when detected early.

Presenting to the nursing staff of Christus St. John Hospital, as March began National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, the consultants at Bay Area Gastroenterology underscored the importance of early detection and the significant role that diet and lifestyle choices play in colon cancer.

In a recent article published in Change magazine, the doctors talked about the preventability of the third most common killer in the United States - underscoring that diagnostic advances and less invasive screening procedures, including Endoscopy and Virtual Colonoscopy (CT Colography), have the potential to dramatically reduce the number of those diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year.

According to the gastroenterology consultants at Bay Area Gastroenterology, more than 50,000 people die from colorectal cancer every year - though this is a disease that is both preventable and curable.  By removing precancerous colon polyps individuals experience a 90% reduction in the incidence of colorectal cancer as shown in the National Polyp Study surveillance program.

"Just as regular pap smears, mammograms and prostate blood tests are an important part of our society's effective preventative diagnostic screening, a colonoscopy should be among an individual's healthcare plan - particularly for those over the age of 50 (45 for African Americans)," said Dr. Ravi Mani, who specializes in internal medicine and gastroenterology at the center.
