Houston-Clear Lake Bay Area Gastroenterology Physician Dr. Sezen Altug to Speak at LiveWell Women’s Conference May 26, 2011

The Renowned Gastroenterologist will Share Secrets for Minimizing Risks and Staying Cancer Free

Houston, Texas (Marketwire) May 24, 2011Bay Area Gastroenterology consultants of Houston-Clear Lake continue their educational initiative to reduce the number of colon cancer cases diagnosed every year. Dr. Sezen Altug will speak at the LiveWell Women’s Conference Thursday, May 26, at the South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center - sharing with women the risk factors and role that lifestyle choices play in staying healthy, as well as the importance of early screening in preventing colon cancer.

Sponsored by Christus St. John Hospital, the LiveWell Women’s Conference begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. The daylong conference focuses on health and professional issues pertaining to women and includes 16 workshops, free health screenings and assessments and lunch with keynote speaker Joan Lunden, former television personality.

Formerly Chief of Internal Medicine at St. John Hospital, Dr. Sezen Altug is one of the board certified specialists of Bay Area Gastroenterology. She specializes in internal medicine and gastroenterology, while working within the community to help the public and healthcare providers throughout Houston and the greater bay area understand that colon cancer is now among the third leading cancer killers in women - though one of the most preventable cancers in today’s society.

“Society has a tendency to think of colon cancer as one that affects men, but women are just as susceptible - particularly if there is a family history, or she has a history of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) or other female cancers such as breast, ovarian or endometrial cancer,” said Dr. Altug.

“As the third cancer killer of women, they benefit from early screening as well but often tend not to think about the importance of a colonoscopy as much as men do. Precancerous polyps can be removed in early screening and dramatically change the outcome for patients - both male and female. It’s important that we educate society about this,” she added.

Among the other topics Dr. Altug will discuss at the conference include, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). This is a common condition affecting primarily women and is characterized by a hypersensitivity of the gut - which can be identified by assessing symptoms. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, alteration in bowel habits and excess gas and bloating. Dr. Altug will talk about the impact diet and lifestyle have on this common condition.
