Houston Endoscopy Practice, Bay Area Gastroenterology Offers Virtual Colonoscopy

Bay Area Gastroenterology is the First Private Group Practice to Offer Screening in Houston

Houston, Texas (Marketwire) August 17, 2009 – Colon cancer screening is now less invasive, thanks to the physicians at Bay Area Gastroenterology. They are the first private practice group in the Houston area to offer office based Virtual Colonoscopy for screening of colon cancer.

Virtual colonoscopy is a less invasive colon cancer screening procedure than a traditional colonoscopy. It can detect problems in the colon and rectum. During a virtual colonoscopy, a detailed rendering of the inside of the colon and rectum is created by utilizing CT technology.

During the procedure, an imaging technique known as computerized tomography (CT) is used to produce hundreds of cross-sectional images of the Colon. The images are combined and digitally manipulated to provide a detailed view of the inside of the colon and rectum. A Radiologist and a Gastroenterologist evaluate the results to identify any abnormalities, polyps; cancer and other diseases of the large intestine.

Virtual colonoscopy has several advantages over other procedures. Patients do not have to be sedated and the procedure normally takes just ten minutes; far less time than a conventional colonoscopy.

"We are pleased to be able to offer Virtual Colonoscopy in Houston," said Dr. Ravi S. Mani. "Many people are very apprehensive about colon cancer screening. We feel that this is a valuable alternative for our patients. Most importantly, abnormalities can be detected and early detection is essential in the prevention of colon cancer."

Bay Area Gastroenterology has four offices in Houston, Clear Lake and Pearland with a comprehensive array of diagnostic services to aid in the diagnosis, treatment and maintenance of gastrointestinal health.
